Baroness Burdett-Coutts...

Assembly RoomsBaroness Burdett-Coutts who donated the money for Greyfriars Bobby’s drinking fountain received the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh at the Assembly Rooms in 1874.

There are now plans to redevelop the historic building. The Assembly Theatre which has been responsible for operating the building during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the last thirty years will lose five of the temporary theatres created for the annual international event  - the Edinburgh Suite, Supper Room, Wildman Room, West Drawing Room and Scott Room plus the famous Club Bar.

The rooms accommodated 68,000 people during last year’s festival, adding up to more than fifty per cent of the number attending the Edinburgh International Festival.

The Assembly Rooms has a unique quality which makes it an extraordinary meeting place for visitors to the Festival.
