auld jockThursday, 30th December marks the anniversary of the death of Alexander Mackenzie.

Born in Glasgow in 1885, the Scots actor played the part of Auld Jock in Walt Disney’s ‘Greyfriars Bobby’.

Eleanor Atkinson created the character of Auld Jock for her novel’ Greyfriars Bobby’ published in 1912. During her research she checked newspapers of the period. Reading that the name of Bobby’s owner was said to be Gray, she decided to call her character Jock.

Alexander Mackenzie worked as schoolteacher in Clydebank before taking up acting at the age of sixty one. The actor who also appeared in ‘The Maggie’, ‘Rockets Galore’ and ‘The Bridal Path’ died in 1965 and is buried in Lambhill Cemetery, Glasgow.
