Greyfriars Bobby Day...
It’s reckoned that over 220,000 tourists visit the world famous dog’s statue and headstone every year. Even while Bobby was alive, he was a bit of a mystery. Baroness Burdett-Coutts and the Lord Provost William Chambers both believed that the terrier frequented the graveyard as his master had been buried there. Much of Bobby’s appeal is due to the life-like statue sculpted by William Brodie, Eleanor Atkinson’s novel which opens with the firing of the One o’ Clock Gun and Walt Disney’s film version of her classic book. The ceremony which commences at one o’ clock is open to the public and we’d be glad to see you if you can manage to come along. 105th Regiment R.A. (Volunteers) will be taking part as 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the setting up of the One o’ Clock Gun. |
