Like Gourlay Steell Sam was an animal lover and featured dogs in his paintings, so it’s possible that he may have drawn Greyfriars Bobby in his sketchbook. Sam also painted the original hanging sign for his local pub the‘Volunteer Arms’ which stands at the corner of Jordan Lane and Morningside Road. This week’s illustration shows his bulldog Madame Sacchi who Sam named after a famous dancer. When Sacchi died her body was handed over to the University’s Anatomical Museum where her skeleton was preserved as a fine example of a pure English bulldog. Sam is buried in the Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh.
