Friday 6th August...

Catherine SinclareFriday 6th August marks the anniversary of the death of Catherine Sinclair.

Like Angela Burdett - Coutts, Catherine devoted her life to improving the conditions of animals and the poor when she was not writing books for children.

Catherine opened the Sinclair Cooking Depot at 33 George IV Bridge in 1864. The canteen provided meals for working men and students at reasonable prices, so it’s more than likely that Greyfriars Bobby popped in to check out the menu.

Catherine also contributed funds to erect a drinking fountain outside St. John’s Church, Princes Street where she was buried.

The remains of the Sinclair Fountain can be seen at ‘Stedfastgate” on the Roseburn to Leith walkway. Catherine Sinclair's memorial stands on the corner of St. Combe and North Charlotte Street at the city’s west end.
