The founder George Heriot left aproximately 25,000 Pound Scots to build a charitable school next to Greyfriars Kirk to educate and care for the town’s ‘puir, faitherless bairns’. The pupils would have been well acquainted with Bobby as they used the gate as a shortcut to the shops in Greyfriars Place including Traill’s Temperance Coffee House. George Heriot’s School which is well worth a visit is open to the public on Saturday mornings.
