In addition to producing the first colour photograph, James Clerk Maxwell made important contributions to mathematics, astronomy and engineering. In 1871 the Scots scientist was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge University. He was seldom seen without his dog Toby who accompanied him to his office. A scientific genius, he was not a good lecturer, as was intellectually far in advance of his students. If you’re planing a visit to Edinburgh, it’s worthwhile visiting the scientist’s birthplace in the city’s New Town. Check out www.clerkmaxwellfoundation.org. This week’s photograph shows the statue of James Clerk Maxwell with his faithful dog Toby which stands at the east end of George Street. |
