Nelson MonumentThe pavement on George IV Bridge leading past the Central Library to Greyfriars Bobby’s drinking fountain is nearly finished.

The wider area around the fountain makes a big difference as visitors can photograph the world famous dog without fear of being knocked down by passing traffic.

The Nelson Monument’s opening hours have been extended due to the increased volume of visitors. Check out :  www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/Venues/Nelson-Monument.aspx.

The time-ball at the top of the monument was set up by Professor Piazzi Smyth, Astronomer Royal for Scotland. Clockmaker Frederick James Ritchie adapted the City Observatory’s master clock to supply the time to the ball.

The clockmaker’s uncle Robert Ritchie who lived at 28 Candlemaker Row with his daughter Maria fed and sheltered Greyfriars Bobby.
