John GeddeaThursday 24th November marks the 150th anniversary of the Smith’s Land disaster.

In 1861 the seventeenth century tenement which stood in the High Street suddenly collapsed killing 19 people.

A young lad called John Geddes was buried in the rubble. As they searched for survivors, the firemen heard John shout.“Heave awa', lads I’m no' deid yet! ”

When a new tenement was built on the site a sculpture of John’s head was placed above the entrance to Paisley Close.  John's historic cry was changed to “Heave awa’, chaps. I’m no’ deid yet!” John died in Liverpool in 1896.

This week’s photograph was taken by Maria Furbelli.
