Greyfriars KirkThursday marks the anniversary of the disastrous fire which broke in Greyfriars when a boiler flue overheated on 19th January 1845.

Although it was not long before New Greyfriars was restored, Old Greyfriars did not re-open until 1857.

This week’s illustration courtesy of the Edinburgh Room, Central Public Library, George IV Bridge, shows the church entrance as it looked before the fire.

According to Wilson McLaren who helped bury Bobby, the terrier was laid to rest under the tree standing on the plot of land in front of the church.
