Thursday 24th February...

78th HighlandersThursday 24th February marks the anniversary of the arrival of the 78th Highlanders in Edinburgh in 1860.

Thousands lined the route from the Waverley Station to the Castle to welcome the regiment which had been abroad on foreign service for over twenty years.

Eleanor Atkinson featured the Highland regiment in her classic novel ‘Greyfriars Bobby’. When Bobby paid a visit to Edinburgh Castle, the Skye terrier was handed over to Private McLean to be looked after.

Although Bobby was toasted in the officer’s mess, the guest of honour, anxious to return to Greyfriars burial ground decided to escape from the fortress by scrambling down the Castle rock.

Bobby's epic escape was re-enacted in MGM's 'Challenge to Lassie'.

This week’s photograph shows the scene from Disney’s ‘Greyfriars Bobby’ featuring the regimental pipe band parading on Edinburgh Castle esplanade.
